21 Frames VII: October to November.

Late October and early November always tends to be one of the more chaotic times during the year. Fall sports are finishing up and entering post-season play. At the same time you have winter sports starting and getting waist-deep into preconference play. One of the most successful Oregon sports this year has been football. It's been a storybook season so far and we've captured every game of it. Our photo crew has been working so well together. We have been repeatedly described as a "well-oiled machine" and I really think that about hits the nail on the head. We get out some 20-30 photos out before the start of the game, 50-80 in the first half and another 50-80 in the second half/post game. Ducks will play Colorado tomorrow on senior day and close out their season at Oregon State for the 118th Civil War. Let's see if they can keep it up and finish the season off strong. My hope is that they will face Arizona in the Pac-12 Championship, as they are responsible for the Ducks' last two losses. Not sure yet if I'll be going with the Entourage to the Pac-12 Championship, a few things have to play out before that happens. If not, hopefully we'll all go to where the Ducks land in the post-season, whether it be a bowl game or the College Football Playoff.

Photographed four different sports this last month. Football, volleyball, and men's and women's basketball. Looking forward to continue to shoot hoops season, I really enjoy shooting basketball. I also added three new clients for men's basketball.

Alright, this month's numbers. 66.3 GB's in photo content was created. That's about on par with my usual numbers. I was nearly kicked in the face twice by a different basketball player in two different games as they fought for lose balls that went out of bounds. I'm on target to shoot 20 men's and women's basketball home games this season. Four different people directly to my left or right had players fall on them or balls hit them during my time covering volleyball and basketball this last month. Ducks junior quarterback and Heisman front-runner Marcus Mariota has passed for 823 yards on ten touchdowns over the one month period from 21 Frames VI and 21 Frames VII.

21 Frames VI: September to October.

This was the first full month of shooting sports for the 2014-2015 school year and man was it fun. Four different sports: women's volleyball, women's soccer, softball and football. I've really enjoyed photographing volleyball the most. Especially in the Pac-12 conference which features some of the best women's volleyball teams in the county and almost always takes a significant chunk of the national top ten rankings. The speed and unpredictability of the game is incredible. Tag that on with players who can strike the ball with sniper-like precision and stop the ball from hitting the ground with high-speed, acrobatic dives and you've got one of the most fast-paced sports in the world. Shooting it is challenging—you've got to find the best angles to capture moments while also trying to keep this big net and poles its attached to from obscuring the players and ruining the photo.

I also photographed a Fall softball (exhibition) game and made a few good shots of a bunch of new players as well as the (possibly new?) uniforms for the athletic department. Softball is always fun to cover. Not much of a baseball guy.

Anyway, let's get to some numbers. I created 70.45 GB's of content over the last month, which is a little over 17 GB's more than last month. I shot 6,576 photos but that number doesn't include any photos I might have deleted in camera during the events. I witnessed exactly one pumpkin pie-eating contest where one competitor, representing the Oregon PitCrew, politely ate small bites of his pumpkin pie while the other competitor, a young boy representing the fans in the stands, smashed the whole pie into his face and stuffed as much of it as he could into his mouth, chewed, swallowed and repeated.

21 Frames V: August to September.

I have to say, it's great to be back at it again. Fall sports have returned and I've slowly been accruing new clients to shoot for. Volleyball was the first to get going at the end of August with football starting shortly afterward. I photographed Cross Country's lone and annual meet of the season, the Bill Dellinger Invitational, for Oregon and Michigan State. I was able to shoot a half of soccer following the XC meet, which was nice because I haven't photographed that in around two years. A volleyball match and two football games finished off the 21 Frames V month. There are roughly about ten sports home events a month (again we're talking from the 21st to the 21st here, not 1st to 30th). The Fall sports season tends to be less busy than the Winter and Spring seasons because it lacks sports that play frequently. Volleyball is definitely the most frequent-playing sport of Fall but compared to basketball and baseball/softball they don't really play that often. That being said I'm going to make the most out of every game and strive to get portfolio quality images. I also hope to get several new clients over the course of this season.

Now let's talk football. As you all know, I am interning under Eric Evans, a local freelance photographer and the University of Oregon's go-to guy for all it's sports coverage. I started working for him November of last year and was able to shoot the last two football games of that season as a secondary/supportive shooter. This year, my job during the games has been heavily rethought and vastly expanded. This year we have a four person team (side note: we've grown accustomed to calling our crew "The Entourage", a reference to our roles all circulating around Eric) in charge of producing photo content for the athletic department. My role in The Entourage is Digital Content Manager. I am the system behind our well-oiled machine. I am primarily in charge of ingesting, sifting, selecting, cropping and toning images and sending them to the Oregon Athletic Department in real-time, during each game. I also am in charge of setting everything up (Photo Mechanic, IPTC, Dropbox, etc) prior to the start of the game and creating photo essay galleries on Facebook and GoDucks.com. On top of all that I shoot pre-game, during the game, and post game when I'm done processing all the photos in my ingest queue.

So Saturday's are a little crazy for me.

Anyway, each month I'm going to try to get into a habit of posting by-the-numbers in each 21 Frames to give you all a look into the kinds of numbers that run photographers' lives, mine in particular. This month I created 53.29 GB's of photo content. It'll be interesting to see how much content I create over the course of 9-10 months of sports coverage. Over the course of a football game (including pre- and post-game) I, on average, process between 4,000-5,000 photos in real-time. Expect that number to go up as I get faster at processing and take more photos during the game. And lastly, the next Ducks volleyball game I shoot should somewhere close to my 40th game covered.

21 Frames IV: June to August.

This month's and last month's 21 Frames are going to combined into one blog post. I spent much of the last two months in and out of Eugene as I visited Portland for some work/family visits as well as took a trip to the coast. I did, however, shoot several jobs that you'll see in this gallery, but not enough to warrant a blog post for each summer month. Anyway, at the early part of the summer I shot the Dirty Dash, a local mud obstacle course race which was a lot of fun. I have also recently started expanding into shooting apartment and real-estate and am working out a business plan that will be both profitable for myself and affordable for my targeted client base. Recently was hired by Healthwire, a publication published five times a year by the American Federation of Teachers Healthcare division, to shoot a portrait to accompany a story on safe staffing—providing enough nurses for quality patient care at local hospitals. That about sums up my last two month's of work. Fall sports kick into gear in the next two weeks so it will be back to business as usual.

21 Frames III: May to June.

Well, here's to a great end of spring sports. Finished up the year with some post-season NCAA Softball and Track and Field. At the NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships, Eric and I shot for nine different schools (60+ athletes) and I created some 68 GBs worth of content over the course of the four-day event. I followed that up with some photo assist shooting of the 2014 University of Oregon School of Journalism and Communication graduation commencement (which it downpoured torrentially in the middle of but lucky for me a parent held the umbrella that Eric let me borrow). As for the summer, I'm hoping to keep busy enough to be able to have enough content for the next few 21 Frames (I have a couple gigs line up already) but in case I don't, I'll have a few vacations to fall back on for content. Anyway, enjoy this month's 21 Frames.

Best of 2014 NCAA Track and Field Championships | Day 4

Day 4 was fantastic. Definitely the best of the four days. Finals galore and some fantastic finishes, especially for Oregon athletes. On top of that the Oregon men provided quite a show, finishing in dominating fashion by scoring a meet-record 88 points and winning the national championship. Eric and I wrapped up the last day of shooting and finished providing our clients with another 200+ cropped and toned photos between the two of us. I'll do a best of post sometime today or tomorrow.

Best of 2014 NCAA Track and Field Championships | Day 3

Day 3 of the NCAA Track and Field Championships felt quite a bit laid back despite being made up of entirely finals. Eric and I didn't have nearly as many athletes to photograph as we did in the first two days. But let me tell you the 5000m was sure packed with guys we needed to get photos of (seven total). The nice thing about that is they run around the track about 12 times. If we couldn't get at least one good frame of seven different athletes between the two of us we might want to reevaluate our career in sports photography. We made some nice frames today, even with there being a number of more photographers present. Here are my 30 best photos from today.

Today followed right where yesterday left off. The day wasn't as hectic as the one before it but it still had us running from event to event to catch our guys and gals. Saw a few national champions named and one hell of a finish in the Men's 1500m. By the end of the day we had moved another 200+ cropped and tone photos to our clients.

Best of 2014 NCAA Track and Field Championships | Day 1

Today was intense. Eric and I worked a 13-hour day that saw us shooting for nine different schools. By the end of the day we had moved more than 250+ cropped and tone photos to our clients. We have another action-packed three days ahead of us but for now, here's my best 40 photos from today's events.

Disclaimer: While these photos do provide a decent representation of Day 1 of the NCAATF Championships, most of my work today was done in an effort to capture our clients' student athletes as they perform. In other words, this photo essay doesn't provide the whole picture (no pun intended) but it will give you a pretty good look into how today played out.

Last year I spearheaded the Oregon Daily Emerald's NCAA Track and Field Championships coverage. My role as coordinator wasn't my only role, however. I was still a Senior Photographer and while I was making sure everything was running smoothly, I was also busy shooting the meet. This month saw a pretty big chunk of it spent siphoning out and processing 200+ little league team (out of around 1200 photos) and individual portraits that we shot a few days before my last post. Would have loved to just batch process them all but, since we shot them outside, many had to be individually toned due to varying degrees of light and white balance. The rest of the month was spent shooting softball, track, and one baseball game. I also worked on finalizing my change over to Canon (from Nikon) and selling some of my old equipment.

This post will be pretty softball-heavy. I spent a majority of the month shooting it and as we are nearing the second round of post-season play, I'll be shooting even more of it.

While shooting the men's and women's Pac-12 basketball tournaments this year, something unique happened to me. I started to get an idea on what it means to be a professional and I started to figure out what I need to do to hold myself to that standard. I, if you'll excuse my language, got my shit together. With all of this in mind I set out on transforming myself. As part of this transformation I will be posting a monthly blog that includes my best photos from month before. 21 photos on the 21st of every month.

This month I shot seven sports. Women's (playoff) basketball, baseball, softball, track and field, and two sports I had never shot before at the Division I level: golf and lacrosse.

Best of the 2014 Pac-12 Men's Basketball Tournament

We returned for one day following our gig shooting the women's Pac-12 tourney in Seattle the four days before. We didn't get back to Eugene until around 3:30am that Monday morning so we slept in a bit and got as much done as we could. I had end of term assignments to bust out and E had some business to take care of. Tuesday afternoon rolled up and we drove to Portland for to catch our flight to Las Vegas, Nevada. The Pac-12 provided us with rooms at the MGM which was the location of this year's men's tournament. We spent the next four days shooting practically non-stop. We shot every game, several pool parties, several exclusive events, and a ton of marketing/promotions and signage.

A little 'by the numbers' before my 40 best photos:

I personally created 155.8 GB of data.
12,022 photos shot over four days.
Eric and I provided the Pac-12 with 1,493 cropped and toned shots.
We shot on five different cameras (four 1D Mark IVs and one D600).
We used seven different lenses (300mm, 24-70mm, 16-35mm, two 70-200mm, 24-105mm, and the 15mm )

Best of the 2014 Pac-12 Women's Basketball Tournament

The 2014 Pac-12 Women's Basketball Tournament was in Seattle this year and Eric and I were hired to shoot it for the Pac-12. We arrived there at night on March 5th and headed back to Eugene around 11:30 pm on March 9th. The drive back at night was a long one that didn't see us getting home until around 3:30 in the morning but it was worth it. We worked our tails off shooting 11 games over the course of four days and got to shoot some awesome women's basketball.

New look, new website

(Nate Barrett/Eric Evans Photography) As a photo intern at Eric Evans Photography, I occasionally get to travel with Eric to do some work for big name clients. Two weeks ago we traveled to Seattle, Washington to shoot the 2014 Pac-12 Women's Basketball Tournament for the Pac-12 and after a quick one-day homestead we jumped on a plane and traveled to Las Vegas, Nevada to shoot the 2014 Pac-12 Men's Basketball Tournament. Those two weeks were incredibly eye-opening for me and I figured out some things about how to be a professional.

It was then that I decided it was time to switch things up a little bit and raise the quality of all aspects of my professional life. That meant a wardrobe change, redoing the website, working on setting up some gigs, making the switch to Canon, and a few other changes. Changing the website and updating my portfolio has been a major priority to me. Got a lot of it done but still have some work to do in tracking down full size photos off my external hard drive.
